Last week, VW cut the product range across the board. The Polo seems to have come out of it particularly badly.

The following models of Polo are no longer available:

Petrol (although the press release isn't clear if these models have completely gone, or if just some interior trim and paint options have been deleted - I think they're completely gone):

S 1.4 75 PS manual
SE 1.4 75 PS manual
SE 1.2 64 PS
Sport 1.4 86 PS

Diesel (these are definately no more):

E 1.4 TDI 70 PS
S 1.4 TDI 80 PS
SE 1.4 TDI 70 PS
Sport 1.4 TDI 80 PS
Sport 1.9 TDI 130 PS

Deek.

I heard they were changing the trim options and cutting a few colours but never knew they were cutting some models from the range, do you have a link to the press release or where you heard it?

This is the full text from the press release. The table won't stand a chance of formatting correctly, but hey!

8 May 2006

CHANGES TO VOLKSWAGEN PRODUCT LINE-UP

Volkswagen is making a number of changes to its product ranges, reducing the number of vehicle engine, trim and specification combinations and hence simplifying choice for customers.

Currently there are almost 10,000 build combinations available to order when taking into consideration models, trims, colours and upholsteries. This is being reduced considerably but has been done in a way that will not affect customers as the deleted derivatives are those with an extremely low take-up.

The Fox, Eos, Jetta and Touareg model ranges have not been rationalised as they have been recently launched or updated.

The key changes are shown on the following page and are effective immediately.

Don't follow the petrol version but as for the diesels.....

E 1.4 TDI 70 PS
S 1.4 TDI 80 PS
SE 1.4 TDI 70 PS
Sport 1.4 TDI 80 PS
Sport 1.9 TDI 130 PS

None of this really surprises me.

I've never understood why they did both 70 and 80 bhp versions of the TDi engines, as there is so little price difference between them, you'd be crazy not to go for the 80.

I don't really see why you'd spend the money on a 1.4 TDi Sport over the SE model - I'd expect people buying the Sport to want the 100bhp version. I don't expect they're selling many 1.9 TDi 130's, as people with that sort of money to spend, would surely be inclined to go for a Golf.

The only one that is a little strange is the S 1.4 TDi 80 PS. Does this mean that you can now only get the 70 bhp engine in an 'S' model - that seems odd?

They probably thought the 130hp tdi would take sales from the gti.? they have hacked the range down a bit  . Why cant vw do like audi and let you personalise your car a little bit more..

Anyone notice that you can get a 1.6 sport now..

It's because VW are being hammered by their competitors on production costs. They have to rationalise their product configurations to stand any chance of remaining competitive. This is good because it means that VW will continue to exist. It is also bad because it will markedly reduce the parts bin available for those into OEM+.

Deek.
