Definately buying one or the other (Cheers Neil) but Ive heard the odd horror story about the 6 disc dash swallowing discs and not returning them. In most cases the entire unit has been replaced and cd's returned once the unit been back to the factory.
I know Sparkstack had probs with his after only 20 minutes but are they really as unreliable as I'm making them out to be.
Also would the be any sound quality difference between them both?

i used to know a guy who refurbed the blaupunct indash multi changers for lexus and the main reason why they died was that the lexus owners wer too fast and while the magaine was still moving prepering for the next cd they would insert the next cd too soon and the unit would jam. they were all just pulled out and replaced but when i looked at the dead units the problem was thet the unit had skipped a tth because the whole magasine is mounted on 4 screwa and there is a captive nut on e magazine so that wn the screw turns the magazine moved up/down. im not sure if the ones your talking about are the single slot type but on most single slot unit this is a comman cause of failure
ps lexus = toyota ... nuffsed about the quality that theyrequired from blaupunct

The unit fitted to our car is VW badged Sony 6 disk slot changer. The first unit wouldn't even accept disks, it was stuck on eject mode. The replacement unit has been working brilliantly since it was fitted.
What i want to know is that if the Head unit is a Blauplunkt (which it is) and the CD changer is a Sony (which it is) then how come you can't buy a adapter kit to enable you to use the CD changer with an aftermarket head unit??

its all abot economics m8
vw want you to buy thier bits and pieces and from them, and them only. so the units will be slightly diferent from what YOU can buy fom sony/blaupunct. the upshot of it being that if your changer goes bad but you want to keep the headunit then you have to go thru vw and cha-ching they just made a load of coin out of you. because if it went bad and you could go straight to halfords and buy another unit then vw wouldnt make anything (not a good buisness stratagy) so the more bits and pieces that are vw specific the more they make

just think if you could go to halfords and buy oem bits then vw would only be selling cars and no parts meaning that the price of new cars go up and less people buy them, which gives them 2 options; reduce the profit on a new car (bad) or go bust (obviously bad). this is because vw make £X out of you when you buy your car and then a certain amount every year therafter meaning that the car keeps making them money over a few years. even if you go to halford and buy a mann filter (not a vw part although its prolly made in the same factory!) mann must pay vw a set price per filter if they state that it will fit a vw and use the exact same design (explains why most filters dont have the anti drain valve). imagine if you went out and bought a spud and it kept making tesco £0.20 a year for 5 years after the initial date of purchase, theyed be loaded but food-stuffs are a single purchase item requiring no maintenance but a car must be maintained and this means that vw keep making money after the initial purchase
example
you buy a new car: profit =£2000
1st years maintenance; profit= £100
2nd years maintenance: profit = £ 100
3rd years maintenance : rofit = £250 (timing belt interval)
so you can see that just becaus of the maintenance vw make an extra £450 over 3 years and if you get into an accident and use new parts then then the prfit soars.
the reason for all this is to do with trademarks and patents. every new car is patented and if a company wants to enchroch(sp?) on the patent rules then they must sign a contract to vw saying that they will give vw a set price per item manufactured/sold (usually a percentage or if the percentage drops below £Y then they must pay a base price)
any way im going to stop there cos i sound like a teacher and im prolly boring you so the quick explaination why you cant but normal sony/blaupunct parts is cos vw want to keep making money out of you
ps this post also explains why homologmated parts are pricier even though they are made in bulk, because vw make some on every part and that is dialed into the consumer price

Picked my new Polo 1.9 TDi Sport up last night and the changer is doing exactly the same!!

I'll be dropping it back for them to sort asap. I guess they just swap it out?

They didn't have a spare one for me - apparently they're on back order. My salesman did offer me his

but I told him not to worry, i was happy to wait a week or so. I've got a feeling he's gonna throw in the mats I ordered at the same time, for free

Keep pushing them! You'd be supprised with how much extra you can get when buying a new car these days.
I used the excuse "come on, who's going to buy a new car, there's a war on!"
That knocked it down a bit
And if there's one thing missing off your car that was promised (like, i dunno - a sunroof or something...) , refuse to accept it. especially if they've already registered the vehicles details to you. It's lots of fun!
