might be getting a cheap set of wheels off my mate tonight but im not to sure about wheels what does the offset need to be to fit and anything else that will matter the only thing i know is that they will have to be 4 stud
and does it tell you the offset on the wheel/tyre?

i dont think the offset will matter unless your car is REALLY decked and may foul the tyre. its just a case of how far it sticks out so if your car isnt TOO low then the offset wont matter. the closer the offset is to 0, the more they stick out basicly. they need to be 4x100 to fit.

standard VW offset is usually ET35-38 altho the GTi has ET45 if i remember right?
anything up to 7" wide you should be fine without worrying...

Yep, should be in this range, but its not always an exact science. you also need to make sure for safetys sake that it sits on the hub correctly. Usually you will need a spigot ring to fit the hub properly. The load of the vehicle should be transmitted via the hub, NOT the four bolts. If you use only the four bolts, you could find your wheel departing the car (seen it happen on a nova).
You can get away with a range of offsets, but again, the offset needs to be correct ET38 because larger offsets can make the car vague under breaking and follow lines in the road, which it shouldn't. If you think about it, a larger offset means that the centre of your wheel is outward from the centre of the steering axis, which is why its more unstable.
My advice would be stick em on, go for a drive, apply the breaks with the wheel slightly turned and see if it feels ok. If it feels ok, it probably is. If it goes all over the place, cheap or not cheap, they no good.

Thought the golf offset was larger, but not certain, and they used 5 studs early on, but you wouldn't make that mistake, so try it, see what its like, you wouldn't by a shoe without trying it.

I think that up to 45 is ok, but it would be better if it was 38, you might find it wanders a bit.

I'd have thought 45 will be ok because that's what the GTi has as standard?
