Hey Alex

I was sure you had done a DIY on fitting the 6N2 rear lights to a 6N but I cant find it in the DIY section.
This is quite a simple conversion isn't it ?.

Hey Chris,

I vaguely remember it too. Bugger.

*Found the thread after a bit of digging!*

It's not that hard actually, you're right about that - the general shape of the lights is pretty similar to our old ones.

To get them completely flush with the boot lid, you need to drill out the middle hole behind the lights. That's right, it means drilling into the metal of the car, so a big 15mm hole is created. This will allow the middle stud of the new lights to sink all the way into the body. After that, the lights may need some sanding down of their plastic edge, but you'll find out soon enough. Use a power sander if need be, I found that the bottom of the clusters could use a bit of trimming, especially on the right side.

The bigger hole will render the middle screw useless (as it simply drops right through) but the bottom and top screws will hold it in place. You could use a ring to help the middle one, of course.

Electronics wise, here's what I found:
After 1998 the electronics change and this guide won't work.

Passenger side (that's right side/driver side for you) means slicing off the two studs on the plug that goes into the lightbulb holder. That allows it to be fitted the wrong way round.

After that, switch numbers 4 and 5, which should be Green/Grey and Brown. So turn the plug around, and switch the wires.

On the left side (Passenger for UK folks) you'll find these wires:

No1: Black & Red
No2: Black & White
No3: Black & Grey
No4: Black & Blue
No5: Brown

and you need to switch numbers one and two around. That's it.

Hey Alex

What colour wires do you have and what position were they originally in ?.
I read the guide on porka but I seem to have some different colour wires on my car !. It's a '97.

How did you swap them round ?, they look to short to cut to me.

Hi Chris,

I actually cut them up - I stripped back the insulation tape a bit, and there was plenty length to go Ghetto on them.

If the wires don't correspond with those stated above, you probably have a 1998 model. During the model change of that year, the entire electronic system of the car was overhauled. It also means that the colors of the wires are in a different order.

This should be the 98 onwards order:

Passenger side:

Tail light: Grey & Red
Reverse: Black & Green
Brake: Black & Red
Indicator: Black & White
Earth: Brown

Drivers side:

Tail light: Grey & Black
Fog light: Grey Green
Brake: Black & Red
Indicator: Black & White

You already know how the correct order should be (taken from the first posts) so I'm guessing you have to figure the switcharoo as you go along. Sorry to be fairly useless on this one, but as I've got the 'old' model, I have *no* experience on the new one.

The above light-order was taken from Fluxco, btw.

Hope this helps even a bit...

I think I may have a 98 model then although I have the old style dash. I thought the dash changed to the newer style for 98 ?.
My car was made 08/1997.

Who changed my post to say novacrew.com ?

Wasn't me.

I even did a search to find that site. Moron.

The dash (clocks) did indeed change for 1998, it's quite odd yours is 'old' but the wiring could be new.

Do those new colour codes make any sense?

Not had a chance to have a look yet. You don't get much daylight after work now :( .

Just done this to a mates polo.

Basically, easiest way through it.

left light:- unplug, top two wires, swap over.

Right light:- unplug, twist the plug round the other way. top two wires, swap over. cut off two tags to allow refitment.

Wiring done.

Fitting the new lights. dont drill the body work, apparently its not necessary (my mate did this bit himself), get a dremel and trim of the surround of the light til it sits flush. thats all. takes a long time to do neatly, but worth it.

HTH and makes sense

Girlfriends next to do so i know what to do, will be lot quicker than the last time!!!

Mate got his lights for £30 froma scrap yard and sold his 16v lights for £40. £10 profit that changes his car completly. looks sweet as. 8)
