My clutch Broke....

I stopped at the traffic lights and i tried to put it into first but wouldn't go, the clutch went all loose and felt like it wasn't connected. If you switch the car off and put it into second the car still tries to pull off but it judders quite a bit, even in first gear it's juddery. This was just before one of my exams aswell!! luckily my mate was near by and gave me a lift. Me and my dad just towed it to the garage now and they said they will have a look at it tomorrow morning. Any ideas what it could be? and what it would cost including labour? The clutch cable has already been replaced once by the previous owner

VW dealer was asking for £150 for the clutch and around £350 for labour

but i've bought a sachs clutch kit for £85 from eurocarparts and asked my dads mate who is a mechanic to fit it, he said he'll do it for £90
