WHIZZING FROM CLUTCH/GEARBOX

Hi all.
I've got a 1999 1.4 16v 5dr polo (39000 miles) and recently the gear stick stuck in 2nd gear. AFter a little bit of wiggling it released itself, and then I discovered a whizzing noise from the gearbox area.
The sound appears when the clutch is depressed or when I slow down. The sound sounds like a bearing as gone , and was wondering if any body else as had the same noise and if so what was the fix. I have read it may be the bearing on the clutch actuator arm.
A couple of quotes have gone down the road of a new gearbox. but the gearbox seens to be ok. It does not jump out of any gear and the only trouble was when i could not get it out of 2nd.
If any body esle as had the same problem and fixed the whizzing please let me know.
cheers & beers

Yes mate mine has the same problem at the min.
I dropped the gearbox out after it got alot worse and have found that the thrust bearing had burst, which in turn have now damaged 2 gears. For the bearing and the 2 gears i've been quoted from vw £183.77. I've been looking for a doner car (one with a rear smash) but no luck so far.
My only problem is that my gearbox doesn't have any gearbox numbers on it or anywhere on the car. It's mildly annoying. If i get a doner i'm just going to swap the gearbox directly out and hopefully i should be able to get back on the road.

Well its been fixed at a cost of £465 ,which i was told it needed a gerabox. It was said that the forth gear and gone. I told the misses to mark the gerbox before the breakdown picked it up. she forgot,,,,
Any way a recon box was put in and is the same code as the busted one , but is dated 1995 ( the date is stamped just below the gearbox code .
I did find a few more problems after getting the car back, first of all there was a clonking from the front wheel. This was a spring on the brakes which affected the abs, they done this while changing the gearbox. Instantly repaired F.O.C .
Then later on i noticed they have forgot to put the green inspection hole cap back on ( top of gearbox for timing ), this could have lead to another gearbox if gone unnoticed. Blocked up for now until monday when they manage to find it ...(cowboys).
The gearbox code for a 1.4 16v is DXJ (6n)
Also i read on another forum that all the gearboxes are 1.0ltr boxes with different ratios , this was told by a son of a gearbox repairer.
It appears the bearings become shagged through age and metal flying around, which means now i'm gonna change the tranny oil more regular.
Heres a list i found as well for gearbox codes :
Polo 1990-93
ATV CEK
Lupo 1999 gearbox code
DWZ DXD DXJ
ESY ETB DKG
Polo 1995 gearbox code
CWN CWV CWU
CZK DCD DCC
CWX DCA DKC
DKG DKE DCJ
DPL CWX DSP
DXD DXP DWY
DXK DXJ DXM
ERD EQW ERA
Polo 2000 gearbox code
DXN DXK ESY
ETB ETC
Polo 1997 gearbox code
DCJ DCK DXK
DXN DYF DYH
ERA ERC
Polo 1996 gearbox code
CWU
cheers
