Exhaust emmision warning light

Can anybody tell me how serious this is as it came on whilst driving today.
Hope its not going to cost me.

The exhaust warning light covers various different things, so naturally how much it's going to cost depends on what it is.
On my car for example the warning light came on due to a problem with the crankcase breather pipe. Had it diagnosed and replaced by VW costing about £80 overall.
Best thing to do is get it checked out by someone with VAGCOM to find out whats causing the light to be on.
