Does anyone know if these codes are unique, or can I assume it is a standard, or can it be found somehow???
Cheers

Your local VW Dealership should be able to re-code it for you.

I really don't know.
Basically there is security installed in these units for a reason.
If anyone does know how to recode them please do not share this information on the forum. (I for one still use a Gamma and I wouldn't like the whole world to know how to re-code it!)
I say go to a dealers and tell them you've bought it legitemately via ebay, then ask if they can recode it.
Failing that, why not contact the seller and ask them for the code???

Josh,
I feel a right plonker now, your comments are very real, and I have contacted the seller/will ask the dealer legitimately - I was just hoping to shortcut the process.
Cheers

Don't worry mate...
I understand you're just eager to get it working (I'm a bit like that... If I buy something I want to play with it asap!)
Do you have a MK5 or above Polo?
If you do, basically the Gamma's (and Beta's) are matched to the engine's ECU. So you will need to either get the code or ask that the dealer matches it to your car.
If you're putting it in a MK4 or below then it doesn't get matched to the ECU so all you need is a code.

the dealer messed up big time when we bought our polo. it was an ex demo, and must have had the beta radio upgraded to a gamma one.when i was looking through the instructions when we got it i said they'd given us the wrong radio booklet (beta instead of gamma)
recently, one of the battery connections came loose, and all the settings were lost.though it was gonna be a nightmare trying to get the right code, but then remembered it was coded to the ecu.
turned the radio on, it asked for code, then about 1o seconds later it came on fully.
