Hi everyone,

I have to renew my MOT soon. I have start writing up a list of things that I need to check and maintain before I take the car for the MOT. My 16v has already done 39,000 miles on the clock. What does it need to replace and be aware of when it heading to 40,000 miles? I have changed the Engine Oil and oil filter. I checked the brake pads and disc, and they still got plenty of miles to use. The previous owner has replaced the timing belt and tensioner when the car has done 28,000 miles. Anyway, can I have some suggestion that I need to look out for from you guys? Thank you for your valuable advices and opinions in advance.

Kind regards,
S.

i would say buy a haynes book but it doesnt cover the valver so heres a list of things from it for the 40k service.

oil
brake pads
oil hinges and boot lifters
ecu fault codes
check rubber hoases for leaks
cv joints for leaks
spark plugs
pollen filter
alternator belt check or renew
check underseal
transmition fluid check
fuel filter
timing belt

then renew if they are older then 2 years
brake fluid
coolant

only other thing i would add to this list is check the steering rack boots. and wheel barings.

MOT points

check wheels for scrubbing
tyres for cracking tred depth and excessive ware
shocks for oil leaks
windscreen for stone chips. if it has any you can goto a "free chip repair" man in tesco carpark and he will do ti for free if your insurance company is on his list if not £20 then £5 for each chip after that
handbrake for ajustment
horn lights fuses

i think thats it.

check its nto cracked or peeling. normally happens around teh jacking points. under the wheel arches on the lips and near anythnig that may get scrapped on the ground.

i dnt wanna sound cheeky but just bcoz its at 40k dosnt mean u have 2 change everything for m.o.t... yea it might need serviced but the m.o.t boys will only be checkin ur car 2 see if its road worthy, there not gonna care if ya havnt changed ur oil or stupid things like that, but wen did u last service it then just work from there an have a look at ur pads an discs, if u havnt changed them in ages then theyll need changed but if they have been changed within a year then just check the pad tread, but as warrmr said the haynes manual helps, thats why i have 1

thats kinda why i split my post into 2 parts

the top is reccomended for a 40K service. ( i think that is outlined in your service shedule.)

then the seccond part after the brake fluid flush if older then 2 years is rouchly what mot man will look for.

and they dont do a haynes for the valver. but its still usefull for referance. the only section that doesnt apply is the engine section and you have rear disks not drums. everything else is the same.

oh and last point i need to make is the timeing belt should be changed every 4 years regardless of milage ( for safty sake ) it breaks you kill your engine. )
