I know this has been asked a million times before but if I put 16" wheels on a mk4 and then drop it by 40mm then do I have to work on the archs?

Hi Drago, and welcome!
The scrubbing depends on the tyres, and the width + ET of the wheel.
To be on the safe side, go for 195-40-16 tyres (no wider, no higher) and aim for an offset of +35. Oh, and a rim width of 7".
Hope that helps!
I think it's in the Mk4 FAQ somewhere too, by the way. If it's not we've got to add it. Sharpish.

I am looking at the KT1 - Klassics wheels.
What do you think?

Good choice.
I know a lass that runs them on her mk4. 195-40-16 in 7,5x16 ET 35 all round, but with spacers at the back to bring them to ET 20. No rubbing, no arch work, she claims.

I am also toying with the idea of 14" pirelli P's with 45's on them and then a 40mm+ drop. Will I need archwork and is this a good idea do you think?

Hmm... Pirelli's...
With 195-45-14 I'm almost positive you won't even come near the arches, even if you drop it way beyond 40mm. The entire diameter of the wheel is much smaller than stock, so rubbing won't be an issue.
Also, the 6x14" ET 38 (35?) wheel is in a conservative size.
So is this a good idea? With such a small wheel + tyre combo, you'll want to slam it big time to make it look right. I say try it.

Ok guys.
Will 9 inch wide wheels be to wide to fit on a mk4 or has anyone done it and it has been fine?

Yeah it's nice. She's redoing the interior with BMW Alcantara and carbon bits. I actually bought the wheels it had, the CoCo Solitude's.

<I have 195/45/16 tyres on my polo and its runs fine. Granted it isn't lower yet( thinkin of lowering 30 just) and there is the odd rubbing of rubber arch inside the wheel arch but its runs okay.
With the 45 tyre on it fills the arch to about and 1 1/2 inch below the wing arch.
