75bhp or 100bhp?

Just joined forum. Looking into selling my lupo for a polo but not sure which engine to go for. As you may have read i dont know whether to go for the 75 or 100bhp petrol. :)

The Lupo's got the 75 1.4 petrol and isn't that fast tbh which is why with the added weight of the polo dont know if it's gonna be mega slow.

I've seen loads of 6n2 se's and a few 16v's in my price range which is what i'm after. But it's all gonna come down to insurance. I'm only 18. zero no claims, pass plus and i'm just starting the iam course. Been driving for over a year on two insurance policies no claims.

Just want to know if there are any members around my age who can afford to insure a 16v and how much is it costing them on their own? Also any 75bhp SE owners so i can see the difference.

If i go for one are there any serious problems i need to look out for? Know pedal boxes are prone to going, when should cambelt have been changed etc?

Thanks
Huw

i have a 6n2 SE, if you buy from a dealer you would pay about 300/400 quid more but you get a warranty and a service.. so make sure they change the cam belt for you save a 600 pound job. To me the car feels very sluggish for a 75bhp model, therefore i'd recommend getting the 100bhp model, however as it's insurance group 10, i found it hard to get quotes on that model and all that i did get were in 2000 pound region, whereas on the 75bhp model i can get insured in same position as you with pass plus living in central london for 1100.
hope that helped

Thanks for that max. Thought you had a 16v :o  . Your SE looks amazing! Your car come with 16v alloys then? Or are the alloys you're selling off another car? :?

Seen a 2000 16v (100bhp) i quite like and it's not too far away. Might go any see it tomorrow. It's done 53K, got full VW service, dark blue metallic aircon, em,ew,esr etc. Only thing is it's a 5 door, but don't suppose it matters. Does £3695 sound fair from an independant dealer? guessing there'd be a short warranty and more comeback if something goes wrong after a certain time. :?:

basically the lady who had the car in first place, she got the full 16v spec including the wheels but 75bhp engine. I put the BBSs on now, and need money so selling the rims. Thanks for the comments.
3695 sounds about right, in my area when i was looking at the 100bhp version they were going for about 4200/4300 from independent dealers 3 door versions with about 40/45k on the clock. The 5 door is longer, and can't really be done up as nicely, but if you intend to do minor mods then you can get yourself a nifty bargain there

She probably ended up paying more than the 16v was then! lol  Can't really afford to be doing many mods anyway with uni next year. Have'nt done much to lupo, just sport alloys and aero wipers really.Need to save really but really want one now . GTI's look fine in 5 door so would think the 16v would too. I would prefer a 3 door coz they look better, but have'nt seen any close to me.
thanks

Just noticed this post, if your after VW quality but dont mind something a little different thats cheaper to buy and insure i can reccomend the SEAT Ibiza 1.6 Sport MK3. Its 100BHP comes with ABS Climate and Traction Control and is only insurance group 7.

Thanks for leting me know.

Owned two Ibiza MK2's a 1.4 and a 2.0litre Cupra, would still have the Cupra had it not been rear ended, they are just like driving the equivalent Polo in everyway.

Looking for a new car at the moment and have driven a couple of MK3's. The 1.6 100bhp Ibiza is just the same performance wise as the 100bhp 1.4 Polo I couldn't find a difference power wise when I drove the equivalent models in each range.

The Ibiza is very nicely kitted and seems to feel more 'sporty' than the Polo and it looks the part in the bright yellow, red or silver. Also the Ibiza has more toys than the Polo with the Climate Control, Traction Control, Multi Function Computer and a CD autochanger. I dont think the auto changer is standard fit though.

The only reason i havent bought an Ibiza Sport was because i couldnt get the part-ex on my car that i want. Definately take one for a drive if you can, most people are suprised by them, I was.

Hope this helps

Cheers paul. :) i'll have to try both. thanks for the links. Not much difference between the two except polo is 16v and ibiza only 8v but the torque on the ibiza was higher than the polo which is better and then there's a difference of 3 insurance groups! Stupid or what when they've got identical power. You'd think that the larger engine on the ibiza would make it higher.

Thanks again

you have to remember that insurance groups aren't worked out just on the basis of engine size, compare a 2.0 turbo golf (14/15) to a 2.0 turbo passat (9/10). At the end of the day, you have to live with the car, and the looks of it. Ibiza has a lot going for it, but Dub runs in the heart

I know . Mum's got a Bora 130 tdi which is insurance group 7 or 8, but the equivalent Golf is group 12 i think even with the same engine.
Thanks

Speakin of which I paid £2750 for mine which is 2000 and has 16,000 miles on it. Was that a gd deal? Its the 75 bhp model.

Regarding ur question I think the 1.4 16v 75bhp model the one I have is fast enough tbh.......I have drivin many fast cars e.g. Mini cooper, 1.9 tdi's etc and im not disappointed at all with the speed she can pick up. Shes not a cooper but she can stick with it for a good while ;)

woooow mate you got yourself a true bargain.. flog it on autotrader now and make yourself a good grand and a half. I paid 4100 for mine with 35k on clock, 3 months warranty and full service. However, black is probably the hardest colour to find in the 75bhp shape... i was over at the dealer as soon as it arrived because the last 3 got snapped up on the day they showed up or before. if you look on the trader, the black SEs fetch nething upto 4800 with higher mileage than mine so im pretty happy
