continuously warping disc

backround

we bought car (polo gti) two years ago. The brakes were warped when we got it so we changed them, 4 months later they warped again. Then another set warped and then another. It takes around 4 months to happen. The stealers cant find anything wrong they have been over it several times. We also gave it to a mechanic friend who spent more time on it but he couldnt find anything wrong either. It turns out that its just the driver side thats warping.

Present day

I have just fitted a brand new set of discs and pads 2 days ago. I have been driving super carefully to bed them in. I checked both disc after my first journey to see if they were heating up evenly and i noticed the drivers side was almost twice as hot as the passenger side (used my hand to do this) I presumed that it must be a dodgy caliper that was sticking or something

Today i made a discovery. I drove the car for 7 miles without touching the brake pedal at around 50 miles per hour. Then i pulled in and checked the temperture of each disc. Obviously the passenger side was stone cold but the driver side was hot. On closer inspection only half of the disc was hot. This means its constantly rubbing in one spot. WHAT DOES THIS MEAN.??????

I guess we can rule out a sticky caliper and a bent carrier as the whole disc would be hot if either of these were the culprit. could it be a warped hub or dodgey wheel bearing.??

all suggestions are welcome. please forgive the uber long post but we are so tired of this. we are on the point of getting rid of the car.

Hi Erika

I've had the same problem on my gti, the drivers side performs normally but the passenger side has been sticking a bit for a few months now. I just assumed this would be a sticking caliper piston but on removing the caliper found that the brake pad on the passenger side was worn down alot more at the bottom than at the top, so only the bottom of the caliper has been sticking, so a faulty piston woulnd't make sense. I had a look at the carrier guide pins to check they were sliding in and out smoothly, turns out the rubber boot of the bottom one had a hole in it, so the bottom of the caliper wasn't returning back to its normal position after the pison had returned (when I pulled on the other ones they pull themselves back in after letting go). I'm in the process of getting a new rubber boot and am almost certain this will solve the problem, can't belive its down to such a trivial thing !

Anyway have a check of these, you probably already know where they are but here's a pic if you don't
