Help/ advice please - Clutch problem

Our 1997 1.0L polo has developed an intermittent squeel/ whine.

It's coming from the engine bay, rhs of engine as you look from the front of the car. I have left it with a mechanic, but typically it isn't whinning for him. He said it does sound like the clutch release bearing though.

I have searched the forum, to find that this is a common problem with this model.

Can anyone tell me what is involved in fixing this (if it is the case) and how much it would cost for parts/ labour (approx.)

The car only has 30k miles and is used infrequently. It's probably only worth £1k so don't want to be out a lot of cash for a repair.

Any help or anyones similar experiences would be useful

Cheers

Yeap common problem both my Polo and my Ibiza's have it, the bearing itself isnt too important, its a small part of the clutch, but due to the labour involved at getting to it you might as well have it all replaced, I have been quoted £200 for the lot. My advice would be to leave it if its only slight and worry when it gets worse, my car did over 20,000 miles with it doing it, before i sold it.

What exactly does the £200 include? is this a new cltch and labour?

Yeah the price included the clutch kit (all new plates, bearings etc) around £60 and four to five hours labour as the gearbox has to be removed apparently. If its only intermittent and you dont want to spend the cash i wouldnt see any problems leaving it until it gets worse, it should squeal quite loudly when it gets to the point where it needs replaced.

However if the bearing does fail then you will loose the ability to change gear.

That sounds very reasonable to me. The squeel has only happened over the past few days, but has since gone away again. However, it is very loud when it happens. I can hear it from inside when it happens even with the radio quite loud.

Thanks again
