Help with Wheel Spacers

Hello all, I'm thinking of buying some spacers for my polo, hopefully before Edition 38. I've seen some eibach spacers on http://www.europerformance.co.uk. I want to get some for my polo, since my 16" BBS RXII's are only 6.5J and are quite a high ET.

I admit they look good without spacers, but would they benefit from spacers? I consulted this with my dad (who owns a tyre and wheel shop) says that they knacker out the hubs and bearings (is this BS?). Also, I'd need longer locking nuts, to deter theives.
What width spacer would be best for my car? I'm thinking of 15 or 20mm.
Any help would be much appreciated
