VW are a disgrace when it comes to the gearbox, would have thought such a 'reptuble' car maker would not make shoddy gearboxes that fail after 40k miles!
Anyway, how many others have had the gearbox replaced or reconditioned?

There are about 10 or so people on here with gearbox problems or issues on the gti. I can't help thinking its becuase we tend to push our gti's a little bit harder than other gti owners out there?
Maybe thats why there is such a concentration of problems on these sorts of forums, as we love our cars!

well you may have a point, although I seem to be seeing people having a problem with the gearbox across all specs of the 6N2.
WEnt to get a quote for my gearbox recon from a specialist gearbox place and they told me they have loads of mk5 polos in with the gearbox problem, so maybe its a common fault?

Come on guys seriously, do you not think it would be interesting to see the percentage of people who have had to have a gearbox fixed?

the gearbox must be matched to that particular engine, gear ratios etc will come into play. So no you cant im afraid.
Going to have to get used to the fact that VW gearboexes are just poo and they are happy for it to be that way.
Have a look at this:
http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/thread/642836.aspx
MK4 1.6 Golf gearbox complete failures
VW don't care and will probably continue to make poor gearboxes.
Im never buying one again, well not until they get their act together.

Thats a shame to hear mate. I've not had a new one but i've just rebuilt mine. It all depends on how the box gets treated tbh mate!
