indicator/windscreen wiper problem

Hi,
A friend is having a problem with her N reg Polo.
The indicators and Windscreen wipers will work fine for a few days then all of a sudden they won't work at all, when they stop working she has to turn the car off then on again and they normally start working ok, sometimes the problem is worse than others and there seems no routine to when they will or won't work. She wants to get it sorted before they go completely and I wonder if any of you could help?
