Knocking Noise, and a couple of other queries...

I am now driving to work everyday, which is approximatly at 20 mile trip, and have found that even though the 9N Polo 1.2 S has done 24,000 miles, its making an odd noise, going over the bumps!
I don't see why its doing this, I mean the car is cared for well and maintained! Its going in for a service in a couple of weeks! It is meant to be its 18,000 mile one, but i purchased it at that mileage so it is being done at 24,00 miles! Can anyone tell me what is commonly changed at this serivec, and will i feel a differene in the car??
Have less time to clean the car now ive got a job in the real world but can anyone recomend, something that gives a kind of show shine effect instant show look??? Also the Polo gives an insane amount of brake dust, how can i beat this, any recomendations?? Thankyou in advance,
