Polo not run

My Polo 1.4 8v 1996 starting running rough after 1/2 mile ,managed to get it home but it now does not start. I have checked the HT side and thats fine. When you try to start it fires but will not pick up.Anybody had similar problems.I cannot get it into the Dealers for over a week! and need to sort it..Thanks
