There is a little bit more information coming out... Top Gear were filming an attempt to break the UK Land Speed Record at Elvington in N. Yorkshire. The 280mph "jet car" in question appears to be a vehicle named "Vampire".
Vampire is driven by Colin Fallows and weighs 2,200 lbs. The car is 30 feet long and drinks 7-10 gallons per mile of fuel. It accelerates at 0-272 in six seconds and is powered by a Rolls Royce Orpheus jet engine. The car is theoretically capable of 370mph. Colin and Vampire hold the Outright British Land Speed Record of 300.3mph.
Any kind of crash at 280mph is not going to be received lightly by the human body... I just hope the guy pulls through :(

Just heard about this on ITV news.

Just hope he gets better. Apprently he had actually broken the landspeed record he was aiming for. He crashed filming extra scenes.

GET WELL SOON HAMPSTER!
