Oil change

Does anyone know how much oil I need to buy to do an oil change for a 1.6GL 1998?
Also what type of oil would I need?
I'm trying to work out if it's just as cheap to go to Kwik-Fit and give them £25 to do it for me.
Anyone used quick fit for an oil change and what oil do they use?
Cheers, Mo

3.5ltr's of SAE 5W-50 or SAE 10W-50/60.
These are multigrade oil's as recommended by VAG.
As polo boi said buy a 5ltr and use the rest as top up when you need it.

It will probably be just as cheap to get kwik-fit to do it, but i'd rather do it myself, at least I know i'm using a decent filter and oil. I can also see what the oil that comes out of it is like, gives you an idea of what's going on inside the engine.

Hi All,
Thanks for the advice.
I think I will get 5ltr bottle and a decent filter. I'll give Kwik-Fit a miss as I want to run some engine oil flush through the car then change the oil.

Any specific brand recommended NZ? I think I remember someone talking about Quantum oil from the main dealers, but I don't want to get ripped off
Do any of these so called 'Magnatec' oils give any benefit or is it a bit of a gimick?
In terms of oil I used to drive a classic Mini so any old cheap 20/50 oil went in with filter/oil changes every few months so all this 'posh' oil is all new to me

Any quality brand will do just make sure it's in the sw range and that it's a multigrade not a single grade oil as these have a lower viscocity [thickness] and become thinner a lot sooner than multigrade oils, resulting in shorter times between oil changes and not as protective especially in cold climates such as winter. The VAG recommendation is VW 500 00 or VW501 01. I don't know what this mean's maybe it's their standard or something? but the oil's mentioned earlier fall into this catogory.

A lot of people use VW's Synta Silver oils. I haven't heard about it being outrageously priced.
I've always put GTX Magnatec 10W/40 in mine.

Can't go wrong with VW's Quantum Synta 10W/40 Semi Synth. I use it on both mine & the wife's Polos. I change oil & filter every 6 months, regardless of mileage & use VW filters, (cheaper than the Champion equivalent, which amazed me). Oil from VW dealer costs me about £30 for 2 x 5 litres. Bargain I think!
