Creaky clutch pedal? & Smell of petrol since service

Just after some advice with a couple of niggles. I've been doing a long commute to work over the last few months, and my clutch pedal has been gradually getting more and more creaky. I've no idea what it is? The clutch seems to be working fine, its just creaky :? Anyone else had this?

Also I just got my car serviced though a friend of a friend of a friend, if you know what i mean. I had to wait ages but it was worth it because he's a mechanic at vw and so I got a vw stamp in my book and a very cheap price.

I had the full service done, and have taken the car on a 500 mile run over this weekend. The car is running great but when stationary i keep getting a wiff of petrol. The guy who did the service is impossible to get hold, so I thought i'd ask on here to see if anyone had any ideas?

Thanks.

Thanks mate, i've got a couple of questions for ya :) When you say the clutch box, dooes that actually mean the whole clutch? Also do you know roughly how much labour time.

Any ideas about the petrol smell, I've had all the filters changed inc. fuel filter but I have no idea what any of them really do or where they are.

Thanks

The clutch box surrounds the peddals i think, bascially its cracked and eventually it will be so floppy you will have no clutch travel, in total including the part cost me around £190, but that was becuase they ad to take the whole steering column out and mess around with my alarm wires aswell.

As for the petrol smell, is it a strong smell? when does it occur? when you rag it? Just boot it briefly?

Hi mate, re: the clutch problem did yours do it even when in neutral? Cos my pedal feels completely fine, not floppy at all.

The petrol smell is a strong smell. I basically get it when the car is stationary, when i'm moving along its fine, but as soon as i stop in traffic or something the car starts filling up with a strong smell. It started happening straight after the service. Any more thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Nick.

Well I have a oil smell in my car atm when I am stationary but that is due to me takin off the crankcase breather. Have u done anything like that e.g. induction kit?

yeah, did it all the time mate, got worse when car had been running a few mile, especially when iam crawling to set off at the traffic lights.
as for the petrol smell, have you noticed any loss of petrol? where does the smell smell the strongest?

Yeah i definately got the same problem, the creakyness tends to be worse when pulling away slowly. its gradually getting worse. I might see if i can get the part cheap of vag parts (d'ya know the part number) then see what best deal i can get on the labour, surely it wouldn't be much more than an hour??

As for the smell its definately petrol and not oil. I don't have any mods on the car whatsoever. It is related to something in the service. Petrol consumption does seem fine, i'm presuming it must be something to do with a fuel filter or an air filter cos thats all they really change isn't it.

Its a petrol smell but it could possibly also be compared to exhaust fumes, when i was sat at the lights it was almost like when you're sat in a traffic jam and your getting fumes from the car in front pumped through your vents.

the part number, i mite have it on the invoice, but you wont be able to get it cheaper mate, and as for the labour it will be a full days work  as they have to take out the steering column and aload of other things, and with mine they had to f**k around with the alarm cables.

anything else let me knwo mate, BTW where are you based?

God dammit, looks like its gonna be an expensive one. :( I hope it lasts for a while cos i really can't afford. I'm based in sheffield, but am sometimes also in the halifax/bradford area, if you know any decent garages round here let me know  :D

Hi mate, i'm from Halifax nr. Leeds/bradford but just moved to sheffield. I'm fairly north in Sheffield in Hillsborough right next to Hillsborough park, where did you come from? Just had a look on google maps to lincoln and it reckons about an hour an a half away, probably a bit too far. I might still take you up on your offer if i can't find anywhere, a decent garage is hard to come by, cheers.

If you or anyone else has any ideas about the petrol smell, I popped the bonet last night and left the engine running and the smell was coming from the very left hand side if this helps.

alrite mate, i used to live in worksop but family live in handsworth, swallonest etc, but i moved to lincoln, its not far to travel, takes me about 45 minutes to get from lincoln to sheffield, so would probably take you an hour, but the offer is always open mate, for me to talk to andy and book you in at his garage 8)

Nick: post a big of your engine bay and a seperate picture of where abouts the smell is coming from?

Ah thats not too bad, if you happen to speak to this guy any chance of getting a quote for just clutch box replacement without having any wiring done like yourself, don't matter if you can't. I've also got friends over in handsworth, probably won't take long from there as its right near the m1. I think i'll take some pics like you said and maybe start a new thread.

Thanks
