Being a complete novice (this is my 1st car) can these bulbs be purchased from Halfords etc or do i have to go to a specialist place?

Yeah you can get them from halfords, there should be instructions in your cars manual that tell you how to remove and refit the bulbs, its not too much of a job.

Just one other thing before you change them though, check that you havent simply turned the bulbs down, theres a circular switch below the main light switch that can be used to turn the instrument lights on and off.
