Drivers Door

The drivers door on my Polo won't open 
It feels like it's the cable that's gone as it won't open from inside or outside. In the past when I've had this problem in the past I've always managed to remove the panel with the door closed so I could access the lock mechanism and pop the door open. Is this possible on the Polo or will I need to damage the door panel?
