Which car? Help!

I currently own a Civic 1.6 VTi 3dr hatch and cover 1600 miles a month going to and from work, which is costing me around £220 in petrol per month
I've worked out that I could sell my Civic and buy a Polo 1.9 Spport TDi or 1.4 SE TDi and save myself £1000 a year in juice alone

That's if I'd get around 55mpg on a motorway run at 75mph.
I love my Civic and don't want to regret selling it if a Polo is no good for me.
Please can anyone that owns a Polo TDi (1.4 or 1.9) tell me what they're like to live with day to day, exciting to drive or boring as hell? I'd like it to excite me and saving money is very appealing too
I've asked people on a Civic forum what they'd do and they've been very impartial with their advice but none of them have driven a TDi at all. So I'd like your side of the story before I make my mind up.
Thanks in advance.

I think the difference between the two in power terms is 14PS. I have a 1.9 sport version, I bought it as a temporary car when my Golf R32 was stolen back in March.
I've found it to be surprisingly rapid and sensibly driven it hasn't let me miss my previous R32 much at all. Expect around 40mpg + in and around town and around 50mpg on longer runs. Plus expect to knock off around £80-£100 off your fuel bill (bear in mind you wont always be doing 50mpg! and are likely to use it for local runs).
I'm actually thinking of selling mine, yet I'm reluctant because its a charming little car.

Whereabouts are you located, mate?
Can anyone take me for a quick spin in a Polo TDi just so I know what they're like

i have an ibiza sport tdi 1.9 130bhp (same as polo gt and fabia vrs) and its a great car, engine is fantastic and the amount of torque is very useful especially on motorways driving!
plus the car is rapid in standard form let alone remapped with other mods!
i can usually get 45+mpg around town and on a long trip i had 68.8mpg and have even seen that figure get up2 70mpg at one point
dino has the 1.4tdi polo and he says that is fairly quick and also very economical and with a remap, it wouldn't be far off the 130 engines but for a bit less money!
