Instrument panel went off for a while, no speed, revs etc.

Hi,
Whilst driving along this morning all my instruments went to zero, Speedo, Revs, Petrol and Temp all warning lights were off too.
The clock and odometer remained active dispalying digits.
I had to drive along not knowing what speed I was doing...this remained the same for about 5 minutes and then suddenly the panel came alive again displaying speed, revs etc. again with the added message in the odometer display 'service INSP'.
Has this happened to anyone before and what could the problem be?

BTW: it's a Mk4 1.6GL '98 (later style clocks)

i would guess loose power connection on the back of the module. I dodgy fuse could also cause this.

The fuse is something I can check easily tomorrow.
I'm not sure what's going on as if it was a power issue or connector I would have thought that the time clock and mileage display would have gone off too, but they stayed on fine just everything else went.

i took my clocks out this week and had the same problem. all fuses were fine and it was plaugged in securely (the clip is pretty beefy)
what had happened was the circuit board has several clips within it to hold it to the facia, 3 of those i unclipped to see how it all holds together. forgot to clip em together again and everything worked apart from my speed! so could be something really minor like that. or just a fuse

Hi Pete,
Sounds promising as we have the same vehicle 1.6 8v, is yours the later type clocks (late '97 onwards?). I'll definitely go and start by replacing the fuse anyway.

yeah its the late style clocks. 98 model.
its more than likely the fuse though unless you've been either kicking the dash or taking the cluster out

Hi,
I had one side of my clocks die (speedo) with the fuel gauge reading from empty to full and back again. This was diagnosed by VAG as a duff panel and was expensive to replace, turned out that it was a damaged wire. I had a new starter motor fitted, it must have been disturbed then.
If fuses etc do not appear to be a problem, may be worth checking wires etc.
