Car is dead :s

drove to pet shops on sunday, then following wednesday (today) it wont start, battery is totally flat, tried jump starting it but when i connected the jump leads it sparked (dont think its meant to, possible short?) and when i try to start the car there is a big pop from the left of the engine bay, like a arcing type noise, the car has been great so far but i hanvent got a clue as to what might cause this. any ideas anybody?
