im doing this on behalf of a friend from work who doesnt have the internet.

he has a 1.4 r reg polo not the 16v version and wants to get an air filter or induction kit for it which ever.

he went into haldfords and the guy said hes better of not getting an air filter or induction kit as the guys friend from halfords brought one and when he put it on his polo he started getting trouble with it and ended up scrapping the car.....

i have the 6n2 polo and i got a k&n on it and dont seem to be having problems with it apart from the emissions level is to high........

so i have 3 questions for u guys.....

1. is the guy right in saying hes better of not getting a induction kit or air filter? cause he wants one after listening to my car but will he be able to get one thaty doesnt damage his car and works properly?

2. is the guys friend from halfords lying in saying that air filter will fudge up the car or was it he might of done something wrong to it?

3. is it possible to sort my car out with the emissions problem? it did fail the mot but when i put my original air filter back on it passed it so its no major worry just wondering.

i have a k&n 57i induction kit on my car and its fine with emissions also i got a exhaust and thats made no difference to mine, if i was to go back and buy my induction kit again i would try and get a BMC so much better imo but duno if they do 1 for a 8v

If the induction kit is fitted correctly, I don't see why it would damage the engine?

My friends car buggered up after he put an induction kit on it. He got a 53 plate focus and after about 2 weeks of it being on the car, the car was constantly stalling and stuff. The mechanic at the garage said his air filter had messed with the ecu as it wasn't configured to run with it or something.

dont some car companies or types of cars want a remap of the ecu when you fit something like a exhaust or air filter or something tho any ways? and it just depends how good so to speak the car is

A panel filter won't change anything. I've got a K&N one on my 16v purely because it will last forever (with cleaning every couple of years) so saves me cash in the long run.

Induction kits just allow your engine to suck all the hot air in from around the engine bay, reducing performace (unless you're clever and can duct cool air onto it from somewhere).

The theory is a performance filter will allow more air into the engine which the air flow meter should detect and alter the fueling accordingly. I guess in some cases the ECU can't work it out quite right, causing problems.

Another possible cause for concern is induction kits tend to ditch the clevely worked out plumbing and airbox the manufacturer has worked out to be right for the car.

Ever heard of BMC CDA? well theres the clever outcome to solve this.

ryte first off, induction kits are great! if you buy the correct type for your model. fitting a "universal k&n style" filter will usually mess up your air/fuel ratio as they are normally large filters which will choke your engine with the large amount of usually hot air because of them being open filters. where as if you buy a specific one or contained filter filter it should help. i have neever had any probl;ems with my 57i and i have made a extension tube up for it and a heat sheild she runs fine. basicly if you are going to use a cone filter without a cold air feed you should probibly gate a pipe and shield sorted.

do u know if they do a k&n panel filter for the polo 1.0 x reg? if so how much would it be and where could i get it? also does it give the sporty sound like other k&ns or is it a plain sound like the standard filter? also can u get one of these for the 1.4 n reg not 16v?

you can get the panel filters for most motors,,,,but they ten to be relatively quiet,,,,a cone filter or an enclosed filter similar to a BMC kit would be far better and available from 2modified and so on.
