Lambda Wires

How many wires should a polo gt lambda sensor have? Ive just bought one and it has 4, (sensor, earth, heater, heater) but the one on my car has three wires, which is correct? 3 or 4?
Right done a bit of resarch into this using google.
Found out it should be a three wire one.
Will i be able to fit the 4 wire one as the extra wire is just the earth?
