Removing seats from a polo 9n

Hi Guys, I have a question I was hoping someone could answer.

I would like to take the seats out of my polo to vacuum thoughroughly under the seats as it is quite dirty.

My question is, is there a danger of airbags going off or something else untoward happening if I take the seats out ? I don't have airbags in the seats, only in the steering whell and dashboard (passenger).

Sorry if the question is stupid, but rather safe than sorry !

In a 9n I'm sure seat air bags are standard.

No, in South Africa they are not, they are only std in the polo gti. I am not sure if the models sold in Europe are different ?

Ah ha that explains a lot then

In that case I can't think of any implications you'd have with taking them out

just make sure you put them back nice and tight

If you look under the seat you may find a wiring loom. Its quite neatly tucked in but quite visible and it moves when you move seat back and forward.

This would be the connection to the airbag or the seat airbag loom (which you dont have).

If you don't have this, I would think its safe to remove the seats

. But if this is there, im not sure what would happen if you disconnect this

if you have side bags or pre-tensioners you ned t disconnect the batery for approx 20mins(to be safe).
then you can take the seats out and disconnect any wires.

if you do it straight away the airbag will go off

best to ask soeone who has done it before though. i am speaking from experience of other cars

Also the polo 1.2E in Uk had optional sidebags

Thanks for all the replies guys.

I removed the seats last evening to vacuum under them. First I removed the positive on the battery before removing the seats.

No problems (thank goodness !!!). The car does have pretensioners in the safety belts, but these are in the b-pillar so are not actually affected by the removal of the seats. I found no wiring/sensors etc, so I would assume that the seats can be removed without disconnecting the battery, but to be safe I would disconnect the battery

- aibags can hurt !!!

Anyway all is back together it is really only a 30 min job and as a bonus I found some lost coins under the seats

Can anyone please tell me how exactly you REMOVE the seats. As in, which nuts and bolts or screws i have to work with, and where i can find them.

I have all the tools I need, Im sure. I just need to be pointed in the right direction. I'm an absolute forum newbie btw, so hi everyone.

also, got some water in the boot, making stuff go mouldy and especially the carpet in the boot is mouldy as a result. the wheel well is full of water. Anybody suffer this problem?? and did you find a way of sorting it out?? I may have to remove all the plastic trim inside the boot (any help on how i might do this as well please.... i tried, it seems really stiff).

Any help on my many issues would be a MASSIVE help. cheers lads..... and lasses

I had a similar problem with my brothers polo

Check that rain water isnt coming through the rear lights, as the seal may not be flush with the body work..

why exactly would the airbag go off? there's multiple sensors all over the car that all need to be triggered in some way for the airbag to deploy. it's not as if hitting the steering wheel would ever make it go off, for instance.

however, is there a risk of some kind of static trigger?

I just wonder if this is a bit of a myth.

Probably better then not to take a risk rather than having to tidy up the mess and buy a new airbag. Water in boot, if not leaking at the rear light cluster, it might be due a water pipe coming loose in the tailgate (rear screen wash), this is an old VAG problem and it could have been caused by you not having enough additive in your screen wash when the weather was cold - so a pipe has pop'd off and now needs refitted. You could work out if this was the reason by placing a plastic sheet on the tailgate - fix at inner top with tape, then use the rear washer a lot - at least if that was not the problem then you should not need to fight with the tailgate trim.

just wondered what the VAG procedure was for removing seats - I wonder if they disconnect the battery too, or if it is just us being extra cautious.

if you do have side airbags just make sure the ignition is off when you remove the multiplugs. i do it this way at work, never had a problem but its not hard to disconnect the battery and makes for peace of mind

lads thanks for the help.... dave and poloecosse, you both have the best rims ive ever seen on a polo. lovin it. i got 17" monzas on mine, replicas of course, so they can fit the 5x100 stud pattern. had 16" genuine ones before. i wanna get mine diamond polished.

anyway, so what we think is that as long as the ignition is off, there should be no problem disconnecting the multi plugs of the seats' side airbags. To be double safe, just incase, we can disconnect the battery for 20 odd minutes before removing the plug. sorted.

but how do i actually REMOVE the front seats. i dont know which nuts or bolts to approach. The back seats are easy as pie to get out, but i really need to remove the front seats. ive got the sport seats out of a 9n3 1.4 sport 100 to fit in my car. im pretty sure the fitments on 9n and 9n3 are exactly the same. but i have no idea how to get the front seats out.

also, the guide for removing door cards is no longer available, which is really annoying. does anybody have that guide, or can they talk me through it please??!!!!

Hey mate, I removed my seats a few weeks ago to put in the leathers

. Its really easy. Just a case of taking the four screws out of the runners. Seat comes out - then put in new seat in by screwing down as you took other one off.
