i had this aswell, i have systemdoctor, and its done the trick.

Cost like £40 tho.

I only really use Lavasoft Ad-Aware SE Personal or Spybot S&D. Between them they will remove most malware. Some require specialist removal tools and you can get these from the Security Response area of the Symantec website quite often.

Another thing to do is go to Google, click Groups at the top of the page, and search for the symptoms of or the specific malware that you need to remove. A useful resource!

Also you can manually remove malware by heading into the Registry Editor and deleting registry keys and values there, but if you delete the wrong thing... :|

Sometimes the cleanest way to recover is to what you are suggesting, back everything up and start over by formatting the disc and reinstalling Windows :)

Spybot Search and Destroy is the best free one out there. Regular updates, gets everything.

Don't really need more than that
