Battery tray

Hey everyone and a Brill New Year to you all.

Right, started work on the Mk3 I aquired just before Xmas, struggled to get battery out, seemed rather large, it was, bloody 55AHC for diesel no less, had to turn it on it's side to get it out. Anyway, it was duff, probably because all the electrolyte had bubbled out into the tray, resulting in a rather large hole and lots and lots of water in the drivers footwell from where it had been standing outside.
So question is, is this area structural or can I pop rivet a sheet of galvanised steel in it's place, will then be laying several mats of GRP over the top just to make that area a tub so prevent further damage. Luckily the overspill of acid has not affected the inner wing area through the drain as far as I can see.
All the rot has been cut out and a shaped bit of galvy steel is ready. I just need to know if I have to add any strength to that area. If so I can incorporate metal struts in the GRP matting, I just don't want to build that area up too high for re-fitting the (correct) battery. I could put the strengtheners (if needed) on the underside, but it's a lot more fiddly that way.
ANY advice would be welcome

Cheers everyone

Jon

I don't think it's structural as such, but I wouldn't put fibreglassiing down as an ideal way of fixing it.

Well it's done now. Didn't just use GRP, rivetted in a sheet of 16 guage galvanised steel first, had to panel beat it a bit to get it to the right shape, Dum Dum sealer in between and then 2 layers of GRP with tar matting over the top just to finish it off.
One of the lads from the local garage called round for something else so I asked his advice as he does body repairs, he said it would be fine, not a structural part and my repairs were good, so happy with that.
Hopefully will be starting on the MOT fail parts (hangover permitting) on the 2nd. Full pictoral evidence will be available after.
Thanks for the advice and the offer of the trays, but wanted it done sooner rather than later for the young lad.

Cheers and a Happy New Year
Jon
