this may sound silly, but hey, probably all used to it by now....

Is it possible to put the round MK1 stylee lights in a MK3?

:D

Mk2 one's would be easier, probably still be a lot of work though! I got a pair of mk2 ones and a grill if you wanna give it a go though!

the wing and bumpers are different shapes so it isn't a case of just taking the old grill and lights out and putting the mk1 set in...

obviously it can be done but it's alot time, effort and money so feel free if you fancy that

As everyone else has said, Mk2 would be easier. You could take the whole front end off a Mk2 (single or double light grille) and put it on your Mk3 quite easily. And you could still retain your Mk3 front bumper

I can't see how.

The mk3 grill only covers the gap between the headlamps, it doesn't surround the lights like the mk2. The mk3 grill also slants from top to bottom as the whole mk3 front end is not only rounded but boes outwards gradually compared to the flat and square of the mk2. This is why the mk3 bumper appears to have a smaller top than the mk2 which has a long flat beak.

As the front wings of the mk2 do not accomodate front mounted indicators the mk3 bumper will eitehr need to have indicators bodged into it or the mk2 bumper must be used which will require a new upper cross member and front panel to fit and not have a gapping hole.

Not only this but the mk3 metal brackets which the headlamps mount onto from the scuttle tray to the upper cross member will need to be swapped, the mk2 ones seem to be closer together for the smaller width of the headlights, they have an extension on the outer side of the car to accomodate the front indicators, therfore this whole unit will need to go and be replaced with a mk2 one.

To fit a mk2 polo grill the wings will need to be changed,
The front scuttle panel may need replacing,
The headlamp mounting bracket units will need to be replaced
The upper cross member (or whatever it's called) will need replacing which is spot welded in at the factory,
The coloured metal grill trim between the upper cross member and the bottom of the grill will need to be changed to accomodate both the mk2 grill and the new upper cross member
The plastic mk3 radiator air scoops will need to repalced or trimmed, the mk2 ones are a cardboard like material and end square unlike the mk3 ones which have an extra few inches toward the bottom of the grill
The bonnet will not sit flush with the grill so that will need to be changed
The bonnet catch will need to be replaced
The front bumper will need new mounting brackets front and side made up if the mk3 bumper is to be retained
The front bumper will either need to be somehow moved back or the top will need to be extended somehow to stop a big gap between the grill trim

You would have to change almost the whole front end to do this without some major bodge up work being employed.

Legality (front indicators) and the rigidity of the front end may also be of concern.

If you're a decent welder, no worries, but as said above, you'll have to refit a lot of the front end of the car.

The mk2 front bumper/mk3 rear bumper will silly IMO.

If you are serious about doing this then you could use a mk2 Golf GTI Big bumper kit, or keep the mk3 polo rear bumper and use the mk2 Golf big front bumper.

Have a look at one of my old mk2's, I had salvaged the bottom half of the bumper already aswell as the indicators, an unfortunate end and just a few pics of it so this will have to do.

The golf bumper iron is necassary here to fit, the bumper will flop around all over the place other wise. Problem was the alignment was off with the polo frontage, the solution was to have two bumper irons. One iron bolted to the other. The side supports were replaced with Golf Supports and the bumper plastic was pulled back around the front of the car, it did need some tidying up and had a gap between the bumper and body work but was far less work than using a fibreglass version modified to fit.
