Dammit, I can deal with the fact the gearbox is getting notchier...i signed up for that, but now the front shocks are making a strange sound when I go over bumps and just to top it all the central locking has just seemed to fry, I literally went to the shops, drove back to work and now it won't lock! it has no problem turning the alarm on though!! grrr....

My central locking does that from time to time.

I think it can be to do with low battery power in the fob, causing it to lose sync with the car. To sort mine out I just put the key in the ignition turn so that the electrics come on but not the engine, and hold the unlock button on the fob for about a minute, this normally sorts it out.
Incidentally the VW handbook that came with the car mentioned that the fob can lose sync with your car if you press the lock/unlock button from outside the fobs range. (and the fob range drops when the battery gets low).

Hope this helps a bit.

Don't think that mine activates the alarm, couldn't be sure though. Have you tried using your spare key to see if the problem persists?

If you've got standard suspension on the gti, i've still got my old complete suspension front and back, lying around collecting dust. If it comes to it bear that in mind?
