Which small block 1.6 should I choose?

Hi,

I'm new on here, but have been into dubs for ages, and currently own a Mk1 Golf GTi which I restored last year.

I'm also about to restore a 1.1 Swallowtail Mk1, and I'd like some information on the most suitable small block 1.6, which I understand will fit straight in bar one bolt in the drivers side engine mount. I plan to run whatever 1.6 I choose on carbs, so hopefully the wiring won't be too much of an issue.

Does anyone know what the bore and stroke of the AEA and AEE engines are, and whether either of these feature an aluminium block? I've heard there is an all ally 1.6 but not sure of the engine code. Also, are there any other 1.6 small blocks I should consider?

Apologies if this has been covered before - I had a quick search of the forum but couldn't find exactly what I wanted - if it's about please point me in the right direction

Thanks

Rich

Could anyone help me out or point me in the direction of some VW technical info?

I've tried their website but not had any luck so far...

Thanks

I have a book at work which tells me all of this, but i'm not at work! Shall have a look if i remember on monday.

Get an AVY or ARC polo gti engine. Mate it to a gt or g40 gearbox. Should be great fun, especially on twin carbs. You'd probably have to use a 1.4 16v head though, cos running vvt on carbs would be very difficult.

Cool - thanks for the reply ;)

Do both the AVY and ARC engines feature vvt as standard?

Also, looking into the Polo and Lupo GTis where these engines are used, I found there was a 6-speed box on the later Lupo GTis - are these extremely rare and hard to get hold of?

Thanks

The lupo engine is differant to the polo one. The mounts for the gearbox are differant. The lupo uses an 020 box (same basis as mk1 big block/mk2 etc) whilst the polo uses an 085 box (same basis as mk2 polo's etc). I cant remember as my mk1 is a big block, but i think the small blocks use 085 boxes, so the polo one would be a lot easier.

All gti engines had vvt.

Brilliant - thanks again Andy...

I'm not sure on the gearbox code of the small block mk1s, but I do know that they're interchangeable with the early polos, so one of those should fit fine.

VVT sounds a bit advanced for what I'm after, like you say - think I'll aim for a 1.6 without it if I can. Do the AEA and AEE engines feature it?
