Polo GT - For Sale (Maybe?)

I'm getting the money through from my insurance company this week, and I'm now faced with a dilemma. Do I repair my car or do I sell it as it is and put cash from that plus insurance money towards a G40.

So I'm curious, IF I were to sell my car, as it is (but with no head unit or amp and the damage unfixed) would anyone be interested in buying it?

Specs are as follows:

1991 Polo GT Coupe, Pearl Grey Metallic, 135k on the clock, Service History and a folder full of receipts included.

MOT and full service (including gear box oil) carried out in October.

ENGINE:
- Polished alloy rocker cover
- Golf 8v K&N on Golf 8v Airflow Meter, mounted on custom alloy bracket.
- Fully Synthetic Oil, 6 month oil changes
- Cat-back stainless steel exhaust system, with decat pipe
- Head gasket replaced in August (costing £400!)

SUSPENTION:
- Spax adjustable rate dampers
- Spax -40mm springs
- Polyurethane ARB mounts
- Polyurethane TCA mounts
- Polyurethane Rear Shock Mounts

BRAKES:
- Polo G40 Setup with EBC Greenstuff pads and Turbogroove discs

WHEELS AND TYRES:
- 15x6.5" Adikt Speed Alloy Wheels
- 195/45 Bridgestone RE720 tyres (2 are 1 month old, 2 are 8 months old)

EXTERIOR:
- Clear indicators and side repeaters, half tinted rear clusters, OE foglights (which work)
- Bee Sting Aerial, original hole plugged with VAG grommit.
- Bodywork immaculate except for damage caused by a shunt a few weeks ago, bumper is pushed forward on the left hand side.

INTERIOR:
- Carpet and door cards replaced with black items awaiting black seats.
- Leather gear gator, with alloy shaft cover and alloy ball gear knob.

SECURITY:
- Toad Ai606 CAT1 alarm/immobiliser with Remote C/L
- De-locked door handles

ICE:
- Kenwood 10cm speakers mounted in the dash
- Head Unit and amp I'm keeping
- Wiring in place for amp and CD changer

Anyone who has seen it will tell you how immaculate this car is, and there are plenty of pictures around of it too. It's been really well looked after and I'd like to find someone who I think will continue to modify it and look after it not thrash it till it dies.

The car will be supplied with its original wheels and hub caps, plus the catalyst and a wealth of spare parts including the original grey carpets and door cards.

I'll be looking for offers around the £2000 mark. If you know anybody who is interested please pass this on.

£2000 with £1000 damage?

Can I just buy your paint and sunroof? :D

£1000 if you use brand new VAG parts, of which £650 was labour in the place I went to for the quote.

I reckon to get it repaired with second hand parts would be a max of £500.

£2000 is allot for a GT, let alone a damaged one. Especially when your taking allot of the 'extra' parts off.

I know its 'emotionally' worth allot more and i'll admit its a VERY nice example. But I really don't think you'll get that money for it :cry:

I'm far from desperate to sell it, if someone is prepared to offer me the right price it's theirs otherwise it's staying with me.

I think you would regret selling, if you did. As it's in such good condition and has sentimental value, selling might not be a good thing. Plus the market isnt very good for selling at the moment.

Say if you did get another, you might have to spend a lot getting it how you want.

The quotes you get from bodyshops for 'insurance jobs' are greatly inflated in price anyway. You could get the parts and have them fix it for a fraction of that cost.

If you decide to keep it and get it fixed yourself, I can think of some engine mods that would get the most out of whats already been done.

The thought of selling it has been going through my head all evening.

Thing is I don't know if I could sell it - I've had 4 years happy motoring out of my car and it's just getting to where I want it to be. In fact, once the interior's sorted that's all the cosmetic mods I have planned. From then on in I've got a list of handling and power based mods on the way if I keep the car.

Now with a grand, I've got cash to repair my car with the added bonus that I'd end up with a mint rear end and rear quarters.

The remainder of the money can go into the bank, the beginnings of my savings fund for that G40 transplant maybe?

Still not 100% but compared to earlier leaning more towards keeping and finishing my car.

I'm keeping it.

I think you need crises like this to affirm how much you actually want to keep a car.

Plus, Caroline won't let me sell it "I can't imagine you driving anything else!" :lol:

It could be a month or two before it's repaired though, as I'm well and truly snowed under with work. Not that anyone but the most eager passer-by would notice it's damaged anyway.

Finally I can get that scratch sorted out too.

Glad you decided to keep it :) Try German and Swedish or Euro Car Parts for a new rear bumper, got my front one from G&S for £30 :D

How did you find the fit? I take it it's a pattern one for that cheap.. I found that the fit on my pattern mk2 golf small bumpers was less than perfect... infact I would have been happy if the fit was good.. Never again will I buy pattern body panels. Should really have learned my lesson with the booty pattern bonnet I bought and had to return...

Fitted absoloutely fine, I wouldn't buy pattern panels like wings etc because they do tend to fit bad. The bumper was fine though and didn't even look any different 8)
