Broken!!!

I am hoping you can help me in getting the information i need, so i know how much i will be forking out 
On the way home today i suddenly lost all gears except 4th! I can put the car out of 4th and can put the car back into 4th but no joy on any other gears inc reverse. I managed to coast burn clutch to a local garage which i know to ask them for help. The guy who runs it has said it sounds like the gear linkage as opposed to the gear box that is broke. He had a play with the gear stick and this further confirmed his thoughts. He won't be able to look further into it until tomorrow daytime as it was gone 5 that i managed to get their earlier.
Now a couple of questions...
if it is the gear linkage how much is it likely to cost me and what is involved?
if it is the gear box how much will it cost?
has anybody else experience this? if so what was the outcome?
is this likely to be wear and tear or due to my driving style/the previous owners driving style?
