I just won a wee gti engine off good old ebay:

Now im trying to get a few places to fit this but they seem reluctant due to any potential problems. They said that if i do some groundwork and find out approximately how many hours will be needed and any potential problems they will undertake such a conversion.

As far as what i have heard previously, its a fairly simple swap

So here i am, asking for your help... All i really need to know is what problems anyone how was done a conversion encountered when doing this and apporximately how many hours did this take?

Is it fairly simple, im not really mechanically minded to be honest!

i was actually looking at buyin that same engine! But after talking to a few friends, I realised that you need to sort everything out including loom, dash, gearbox, clutch. You will also need to make sure you get the keys with the engine and programme the central locking to it. From what i've found out it's actually a better idea to just buy a gti

A mechanic i was speaking to said something about the possibility that the driveshaft and some of the hoses from the exhaust not fitting on to the new gti engine and othe hoses which carry fuel to the engine... also mentioned potential problems with the amount of fuel getting to the engine.....

Can anyone clarify this? Just basically need a breakdown of problems with the conversion and easy solutions on to how these can be overcome etc so i can pass this on.

Not necessarily true, you can keep your original keys and use it for the central locking and have the keys that come with the engine to disengage the imobiliser.

It is an easy swap, just needs time to make sure the looms are wired up correctly. you'll just need to mark which loom or wires go where, it'll be almost identical to match it to the GTI engine.

does that mean you will need 2 sets of keys for the car?

I think so, but im not too sure. I'll find out when i come to doing it.

My dad told me, but cant remember exactly what he said.

Around the steering lock is a sensor (called a terodial coil) that senses the chip in the key. This is the theory. However, if you seperate the key from the remote part it will still start the car. Which confuses me as to how it works! If the key is required however, it is possible to hide the terodial coil in the dash somewhere and just glue the correct key too it, so you no longer have an immobilser. Job done.

Do the conversion yourself, should take a weekend on the drive and be p!ss easy, If not bring it down here and i'll do it for a couple ton.
