Any help on what to use would be greatly apprieciated!

1. Remove engine
2. Respray
3. Re-fit new engine

Bar having to remove the engine smartass!

Autoglym Engine & Machine Cleaner and an Autoglym Wheel Brush.

(or some of that Gunk stuff and a stiff brush)

Looks like a weekend job to me. Be prepared for sore knuckles!

The only problem you will have is keeping it like that, I imagine you'd use the 9n in bad weather though.

I cleaned mine up with a load of Gunk and an assortment of brushes. Don't expect factory pait to come up anywhere near as good as that. That is phenominally clean!

Just annoys me that the car is pretty much mint outside yet dirty in the engine bay

just cleaningand painting engine components (mounts, gearbox, etc) will make a huge difference, even in a dirty bay.

to get ur engine looking like that u need to:
a) get sore nuckles
b) get a supercharger

i think there is some way that u can wash the engine with some sort of jet spray! it helps when trying to find oil leeks! i think it will probably need a good wash off first and then some coats of paint on some engine components!

I have tried quite a few different engine cleaners/degreasers. Autoglym isnt that good, especially for the price. I found comma is a good one, get a long handle paint brush and get stuck in.

A basic clean with a rag can do the world of good. Just using the rag on the underside of my bonnet made a big difference. also replacing the easy to get to bits that maybe look tired can help. I changed the standard ducting that goes from the manifold to the air box with a Halfords one, and it looks a lot better for that, and it was cheap too.

2) get yoof to do stuff
3) stand back and admire

Step 1: Remove loose stuff with hose + brush.
Step 2: Cover everything in sight with copious amounts of vastly expensive engine degreasant. Leave for 5 minutes or so, then scrub hard. Try to remove all of the thick oil deposits in this step. Never mind if the paint doesn't shine yet, just get rid of the oil.
Step 3: Using meths, rub a little bit of paintwork at a time to get the layer of grease off the paint, then remove again with water before the meths eats through the paintwork (as it will if left there..). The paint will look lovely and shiney now, with any luck
Step 4: Polish up anything that's polishable You can get some kind of engine bay paintwork protector, from Turtlewax or someone I think, leaves some kind of a film over the paintwork to stop grease building up again. Never used it myself, but it's worth a shot if you can find any

Admittedly I did this whilst I had the engine out of the car in bits, and there's a fair bit of paintwork (cylinder head, rocker cover, air box lid, manifolds, heat shroud, various little bits of touching up of the engine bay..), but this is what you can expect to achieve with a bit of elbow grease:
