MK3 Polo Gearbox into MK1 1300 Golf ?

I have heard from a few people that a 5-speed gearbox from a MK3 Polo (I'm not sure which trim level or engine specification) will swap into a MK1 Golf that has a 1300cc motor commonly used in MK1 Polo's.

I know I'll have one hell of a time actually getting my hands on one of these tranny's here in the US, but I have a few possible sources and I'm willing to have one shipped over if it will, indeed, bolt right up to my motor.

Below is a photo of my actual motor and current 4-speed gearbox for reference.

Also, what gear linkage would I have to use? From which car/tranny?

And will I need to switch from a cable actuated clutch to a hydraulic clutch?

Any advice or insight is much appreciated. :D

The 085 box is a direct replacement for the 084 apart from the gearbox to chassis rail mount with you will have to make. I used the chassis end of a big block mount, as the bush is bigger, with the gearbox end of a Polo mount and bridged the gap with some steel tube.

That's all really good info, thanks, but from what car will I find an 085 gearbox?

Standard MK3 Polo? G40? :?:

Also, what about a clutch and clutch linkage? Can I use the existing cable actuation? Will I need different gear linkage?

Can I use my existing axles or will I need different length ones?

Sorry for all of the seemingly simple questions, but not having access to Polo's here in the US makes access to technical info impossible at best! :(
