Mark 2 Handbrake cable Replacement help please.

Car is an '89 Mark 2 Polo and I am in the process of replacing the o/s/rear cable. New cable is fitted into trailing shoe but the other end has to fit into the compensator which is a rectangular bracket that effectively joins the two wheel cables to the handbrake cable. What is the knack?
Spent most of this afternoon lying in a puddle of water trying to get the new cable into the compensator but there isn't enough slack. If I disconnect at the brake shoe and slot in at the compensator I can't then refit the other end back in the shoe. I have slackened off the very hard to get at , hack the carpet away, adjuster on the handbrake.
My Haynes manual which goes up to '88 shows the old type of set up with a quadrant and a lovely easy to get at adjuster but that is nothing like mine - in the supplement it shows the new modified setup that I have but says no more info available at time of going to press :(
Help please - there must be an easy way!

My mk2 had one of these style handbrakes, I'll grab the mk3 haynes manual and copy out the text for you.
