Hello, I have decided i want to get a polo as my first car! I like the shape of both the mk4 and the mk5 as they are similar. However, I can afford either model but i was wondering if there are any positives and negatives of getting the newer model?
Cheers, Matt

hi matt,
being slightly older, you'll probably be able to get a higher spec mk4 for the same money.
the mk5 interior is much better - a more modern design and much better materials.
be careful when choosing engines if you're looking at the 1.4 16v petrols. the mk4 16v came with 100 bhp, on the mk5 there are 75 and 100 bhp models around.
the gearboxes on either model aren't the strongest part of the car.
a look through the sticky at the top of the page will tell you about common mk4 problems!

chances are if u buy a mk 5 u will find it quicker acceleration. i have a 1 litre mark 5 and my mum has a 1.3 mark 4 and i have driven her cars and i can say it wasnt as quick as my polo to pick up speed of the mark but once it was going it start to pick up speed.
i also believe the mark 5 is more comftable inside with the position of the steering wheel and the seat and leg and head room for driver and passangers.
like dragon green said there are different models around and chances are if u got the mark 5 1.4 16v 100bhp u should find it faster then a mark 4 of the same.
also as dragon green said about the gear boxes, im not sure about my mums car but recently, about a month ago or so, i just got my car back from my cousins garage as it had a new clutch put in and the gear box and engine have both been rebuilt with new parts so i dont have the horrible noises i used to have. altho being my cousin it was cheaper then if i took it to a normal garage.
not only that, but as much as i like my car im thinking of selling it and getting something with a bigger engine not sure yet tho.........

I had a 1.4 mk4 & bought a mk5 gti a months back, loved them both to bits..you can't really go wrong but I would say the mk4 wins on reliability...it lasted 10 years and had no major faults..my gti i love, looks the part, the interior rocks but its the burden of my life
