Im looking for a polo GTI, silver or black. under 70k on the clock. I need it for work and i dont want to spend more time at the mechanics than on the road. I only need the car for a year. I know the gearbox problems etc, so if its had a brand new box thats a bonus. Im willing to travel but only for a genuinly good exapmple that hasn't been abused.
Budget is 4500.
thanks

Best place is Autotrader. That's where I got mine. You've set a realistic budget too so shouldn't be hard to find one

I found mine on an enthusiast forum, its probably one of the best places to look for cars which have been well cared for.
It has just over 60k on the clock and cost me £4450 at the beginning of October. It has had no problems since I bought it and looking back at the history I can see no problems previously other than the pedal box which is covered under vw recall anyway. I have a service booked next monday so we'll see what happens with that but so far it has been very reliable.

byrony which forum?
Autotrader sellers seem to charge silly prices.
Am i better off leaving the polo gti idea alltogether and going for a sensible car?

If you want guaranteed hassle free motoring and definately only want to keep the car a year I would probably say yes.
You don't want to risk £700+ bill for the gearbox, on top of servicing and depreciation costs, just for one year of ownership
If you just want something to get you from A-B without spending any money on it or worrying where you leave it, but at the same time is fun to drive, what about a Fiesta zetec S ? If you can't hack the Ford badge, and want a VW, a
Lupo 1.4 16v sport (100bhp), would be within budget, and are pretty nippy cars, not that much slower than the gti . Without knowing more about you/your cars requirements, it is hard to offer more suggestions..................

I think it was a combination of this forum and also club polo! I bought it from 'fink' on here, who since bought a mondeo which he then sold to go back to a 6n2 Polo so they can't be all bad!
As I said before, mine has got me through 5 months trouble free, but theres no guarentee on any car that it won't break down during the course of a year.

I'd go for a Mk5 Fiesta ZS. Less power, probably rusty but better handling, cheaper and still looks great
