I went to the dealers on Monday morning to complain about wierd whineing noises coming from my gearbox when accelerating in 1st gear.

The technition took it out for a test drive and confirmed that the gearbox needed replacing

So, it's in on the 12th March for a new gearbox (under warranty thank the lord!)

Anyway, I was just wondering whether any other GTi owners have had the same problem?

sooky- tales from behind the syncro mech- lol
if some one can get me a tranny code then i might be able to tell you what the common probs are but if any one gets a whining in gear or it pops out every so often then youve prolly chipped a tooth some where along the line
ps if the tranny code is 020 then yeah they die really easy but there are other boxes that will go in there place.and possibly a vr6 box which might be slightly closer ratio (heavier car)

i know im a bit late on this subject, but my gearbox went in mine too, and mine was out of warranty because i didnt have the second service at VAG! :x

luckily, i work of a crash repair garage who gets a lot of partsfrom the local vw dealer and they did me a cheap box.

unfortunatly, it seems to be a vey common fault!

We had a look under my engine this weekend while it was on the ramps...

Took the plastic cover thingy off etc...

Found a lot of gearbox oil on the bottom of the gearbox, like it's been leaking! The other week though, I had them check my gearbox oil level and it was fine. Wierd!

Anyway, it's going in on Wednesday, so we'll see what they say.

I'm getting a new 1.2 polo to drive around in while they do the work.

On another note, when we were looking under the engine, they found that the wire/plug going into the air con pump was disconnected! I wondered why it wasn't getting as cold as it used to (every now and then I give it a blast on LO to get things circulating etc) I thought the gas had gone!

Reconnected it and it's fine now. I can only assume that when it went in for the clutch/pedalbox problem they forgot to plug it back in.
