Exhaust Emission Warning Light

Hello all,
We've just bought a Mk V Polo (having had 3 Polos of various types before) and on the way home the exhaust emission warning light came on. Coincidently with the boot being slammed shut. A few minutes later it went out. Private sale, so no warranty. What could it be, what's it likely to set us back. I did a search and lots of people seem to have had the problem but there was no follow up.
