Alright out there,
Ive just bought a Polo OpenAir(98), Mk4 I think, she's totally std but in Black and with the rag top.. Sweet
The plan is to ecconomise, but I was well sad to loose my A4 Avant Quattro 2.8 Nutter Superfly wheels, and buy this old banger !!
As it turns out im having fun, and I dont wince with pain at the pumps, tax, and any garage experience, infact ive only filled it up once and still going. The polo is 1.4 but nippy, turns out I can change gear faster than Audi Tiptronic too. (those front tyres are going to need changing soon)
Anyway it came with no ICE and crap 13" steel wheels, I dont want to have to mess about with the suss and arches etc, its bumpy on the isle so im liking the soft springs, but I think I should be able to go upto 14-15 without dammage. Any advice, what size and ofsett stuff ??
I can figure out the CDHead unit etc, but whats with the door mounts there big but I think mine are empty, as the mesh is solid ?? any idea on size and depth etc ??
Cheers Polo conosours

Cheers Ben,
Much appreciated, Does anyone know more about the Wheels, mine are 13" on a 98Polo CL Openair, but I would like to go upto 14-15's and a bit less rubber, what about this offset malarky tho ehh ??
Getting a JVC head today, but might just hookup the parcel shelf speakers, and worry about this door/dash speaker stuff later, are the dash ones tweaters that need a xover from the doors ??
Cheers ears..

Fenner, I am a fellow Isle of Wight Polo nut, glad to see that there are others backing up the Polo and VW side on our side of the Solent!
My name is Rob and I drive a White 6n GTI. 5dr. Might have seen me around....N reg.
Check out this forum that I am currently running, its been quiet recently but its getting better:
www.iwvw.vze.com its purely for VW owners on the Island, we trying to get a monthly meet going....
Anyway, you can go up to 15s no problem, I haven't changed my alloys yet because the car used to be my dads and he wouldn't let me put bigger alloys on so I was stuck with the standard 13" alloys that came with my car. There ok. I would advise you not to go to a very low profile tyre tho, the roads over here are covered with pot holes and you'll probably end up wrecking your alloys with low profiles on.
The door speakers are 6.5, the grills should pop out, im currently waiting for some 6.5" woofers to turn up to go into mine. The best way is to just put a flat screw driver down one side and pop them up.
As far as I can remember the tweeters are not crossed over from the doors. I upgraded my tweeters last year and had to mess around with the wiring a little bit. Best way to find out is to disconnect the door speakers, if the tweeters cut out as well then they are crossed over if they dont, there not.
Obviously if there are no speakers in the back (which there arnt) the ISO cable that comes with the head unit does not have any connectors for rear speakers so you might need to buy a new ISO cable and then join up the connections.
Hope this helps.

Hey Rob,
Cool thanks for the reply, Ive since seen another two OpenAir's on the Isle, isnt it always the way when you get a new car
Ive got my CD player working now, im not sure if its normal, or just mine but the door speakers are connected in ISO as if they are Rear, and the Dash speakers are Front ?? So I guess that Xover thing is if your getting serious and you setup the dash ones as tweaters for the big bad boys in the doors.
I will keep an eye on your www, so might cya at an IOW meet..

welcome to the world of semi-convertible goodness. The roofs are awesome arent they? lol. Yay more open airs!!!
Not enough of them on here. Not many regular posters (that ive noticed atleast) have em. So stay on the site damnit! I cant hold the fort up alone lol.
Hey im off to the isle of white some point in the summer. taking the polo aswell, well shud be. family vacation and we havnt made up our minds yet. So if you do pull a meet in the summer maybe ill get lucky and itll fall on that weekend im down.
If you want some soft springs get the GSF ones. I have them on mine and cant really fault them so far. Nearly had em a year aswell. Though they are tbh pretty soft. Almost... standard soft... Probability there just standard springs? quite high me thinks lol. But yeh either way theyre kool and only 40 quid so f**k it ay? bargain. Though theyre are springs and stuff on ebay for similar prices i believe. They kud be better, i dunno. Chances are theyre just GSF ones anyway lol.
