You want to drill the holes so that the air still passes through the filter. Id do the side if i was you. If you're unsure take the lid off and look inside. You should have a donought filter. Drill outside it.
Side effects: Faster acceleration 8)

not to go abck on what the other dude has just said but... would it really make a difference?? The airbox on the polos is fairly spacious anyway so must hold quite a bit of air already? Im no expert though. Maybe im wrong. But err... imo i dont think it would make a difference.

How much air does an engine take in anyway??

i wouldn't bother as you will probably suck in more engine bay heat...

true, this is the most stupid mod you can do, you'll lose engine-performance with this, definately!

of course an induction kit is going to be slightly better but if you dont have the money then its still ok to drill the box. I recon it would still make a bit of an improvement. My oem box is very restrictive compared to the air filter i have now. Acceleration would still be improved if drilled imo.

I'm willing to bet 1.000 euro on the contrary m8 ;) It will only start sucking warm air from under the hood, and hot air has less density then cold air, which implies fewer oxigene particals per cc of air. This will be measured by your air-mass-meter, which directs a signal through your ECU to your injector to inject LESS fuel, which ultimately leads to less air/fuel mixture in your cilinders and therefor less performance/bhp/power/torque/however you want to call it

I once drilled the airbox on my Cordoba with standard air filter installed, sounded quite cool around town but was unbearable on the motorway! Soon taped up the holes lol ...ah the things we do.
