wow that is a very healthy mpg mate!

on the trip back from santa pod on sunday i averaged 64mpg over 150miles, travelling at between 60 and 80 for most of the trip.

my highest constant average ever was 68.8 coming back from southampton (again 150miles) but i have seen it hit 70+mpg over short periods once or twice!

that bluemotion out this summer seems pretty amazing, 74 or so combined!

My tdi surprises me... Ive had 70.4 when caught behind an arctic on a road that you couldn't pass on sat at 50-55mph. Usually see 59-64mpg on motorways at normal speeds..

yeah I guess everyone had seen this high at times, just thought I'd resurrect the old "i love my mpg" debate!



warm weather helps as well. almost got a whole tank at 60mpg

less the innaccuracy of the reading of course, although I have noticed that it's much more accurate in the polo than the passat.

I was amazed people can get above 60mpg at 75mpg though. how much psi in the tyres?

I had a phone call at about 7.30pm from a guy complaining about his mk5 r32 only doing 18-22mpg. I was driving and had just finished a 85 mile trip and told him mine was currently sat at 51mpg average. The 85 miles were covered at speeds between 70 and 90 on motorways. He completed the conversation by asking how much it would be to remap an A3 tdi when he gets one.

There must be something good about the diesel as I was reading that Alpina have released a diesel BMW kit now too : )

er, yes - overtaking sometimes needs twice as many gears as it does in the 100bhp petrols.

turbo whistle is quite nice but sometimes I guess the diesel rattle can be off-putting.

smoke on older worn engines?

apart from that, not really. the handling isn't even that bad either.

edit: 2nd hand prices, I paid 7500 for mine with 11k on the clock.

ssssssssshhhhhhhhhhhhh stop tempting me! It'll either be with Richard or ChippedUK when I get it done. need a nice fresh set of oil and gearbox oil first.

almost got a full tank @ 60mpg this time. Should be good for 500 miles.

regarding the remap - I've pm-ed Richard and needless to say it's very tempting. Hopefully his prices will force things like the revo etc to reduce in price as IMO those ones are very overpriced.

Diesel costs more than petrol.

Petrols can be pretty good on fuel too.

diesel may cost more than petrol but........u get more miles out of the diesel than the equivilent amount of petrol!
one more disadvantage of the diesel is what they call 'diesel rattle', the sheer vibration of the engine can lead to other parts of the car (especially the dash in my case) being noisy and rattly!

I get that in my MK4, so i had to take out as much little things as I could to try and lessen the rattling i.e. anything in glovebox, door pockets, boot etc
