Breather filter helps by not allowing the horrible crappy oily mess back into the engine. However. A problem does come from this. The filter needs to be cleaned on a regular basis. You'll also find you lose a little oil though it and it tends to make a mess of your engine bay by chucking oil everywhere (personal experience anyway). The solution I've just done is to buy an oil catch tank and run the filter off this. This catches the oil so less mess and smell. Only problem is there's no room in the engine bay for one, so i've had to relocate the power steering resevior to accomodate this.
