new car problem!!

Hey guys,

Thanks for answering my questions on a previous post, now i have bought a '97 polo 1.4 8v cl with aircon, we drove it about 15-20 miles back from where we got it (we were about a mile from my house) and it started behaving very odd....

What happens is when you try to pull off, the car splutters and the revs drop right down like its about to stall. it is very lumpy and jumps a lot but when the revs get above 1000-1500rpm the car is absolutely fine. Idle is also fine, its only when it is idiling and you touch the accelerator that it goes crazy.

The whole car including the engine was cleaned with a water jet thing, i have been told it could be moist from that but wouldn't the water have completely evaporated over the 15 or whatever miles we done on the motorway?

Please help lol. Thanks in advance!!

it's possible that you've got a switch or something wet when it was jet cleaned.

maybe give it a while to dry out - when it's sunny, get the bonnet up and get some sunlight in there for a couple of hours.

you can also drive water out by using WD40, but of course you need to know what's wet in the first place....

mind you there are lots of similar questions asked quite often.... have a look through a few pages in this section or in the common problems FAQ at the top of the mk4 section.

hope this helps you, and welcome to the so-called joys of motoring

I suggest checking that all the water is gone from around the spark plugs and distributor first, just incase the drive didn't do it. Maybe take a hair drier to it.

Is it when you accelerate hard (when in gear not neutral)? Like a mis-fire, without as much power as normal? Mine did this a few weeks back, I changed spark plugs, which didn't fix it. Then HT leads which did. Plugs where about £12, Leads I got for £36, which is cheap for a 16v. The 8v ones are cheaper.

Hope this helps,
Steve
