Hi guys, right just been talking to a mate and he told me you can tell what BHP a VW Tdi is by looking at the colour of the badge. He said if the
I - is red its 110bhp
DI - are red 130bhp
and if the TDI is red then its 150 bhp.

Is there any truth in this or is he pulling my leg?

it does go on power, but its not the same across the vw range.

the polo 100bhp tdi is a red DI

i think bora's and golfs are different

I remember of the Passat it was
no red - 90bhp
I - Red - 110bhp
DI - Red - 130bhp
TDI - Red - 150bhp

We've had this debate over on the VW passat forum - generally that's right, however the badge application was done at a dealer level (IIRC), and you often find the engines not badged right (my polo has no red letters on the engine for instance) and also the bootlids.

I've never heard of the polo range being badged wrongly, however there are tons of examples of the passats with the wrong red letters on the boot!

there's no 1.9tdi 150bhp passat (unless that's changed now), the top one was the 130. that was a red DI. the golf had all red TDI which was the 150 as you say. there was a v6 tdi at 150-160 but I think that had all silver letters? hmmm. definitely different to the golf 150 anyway!

It's not that accurate though, my brothers Golf has got a red DI but is 115bhp

yes, the golf had about 100 different bhps and letterings!

my ibiza had a red DI and is the 130bhp sport!

Mine is a 1.4tdi and has Red DI on rear and engine cover ????

that's my point exactly, this was down to a dealer level IIRC, that shouldn't be a red DI strictly, as it's a 1.4.
